HARO Shift Plus I/O 5 Mountain eBike

Are you first getting into e-mountain biking? Do you want a quality bike for less than half the price of the top-range options? Here it is.

Haro has deep roots in the BMX scene, and they bring that fun, adventurous (and affordable) spirit to their mountain bikes.

160mm of front and rear suspension takes the sting out of bumps, while the 27.5-inch wheels roll easily over roots and rocks while treating you to a nimble, fun ride.

The integrated Shimano motor and drivetrain give you complete, easy control of the amount of juice the bike adds to your leg power. Ride long and mellow or short and fast: It’s up to you!

This electric bike is ideal for blue mountain bike trails: Blue mountain bike trails are moderately bumpy, have some steep grades and tend to be twisty. As you start getting the hang of mountain biking, this is where most of your fun happens. On this bike, green trails will feel easier than normal. If you have enough skill, you can shred blacks.

Class 1 ebike: This electric bike only delivers motor power while you’re pedaling. When you reach a speed of 20 miles per hour, the motor turns off. You can keep pedaling, but it’s a lot more work. Class 1 is the most commonly allowed type of ebike; you can ride on almost any road or bike path, and on many mountain bike trails. Be sure to check your local rules.

Shimano STePS E8000 motor: 250 watts continuous power, 70Nm of torque. This proven powerplant from the world’s most reliable component maker is found on many high-end ebikes. When the Shimano motor kicks on, you really feel its power and enthusiasm. Whoo hoo!

504 watt-hour battery: The light battery provides enough power for shorter rides on flatter ground, especially for lighter and/or fitter riders, while keeping the total bike weight down. To estimate how long you can ride this bike, divide the battery capacity by the amount of motor power you’re using. For example, a 504wh battery with the motor running at 250w would theoretically run for 2 hours. The same battery at 125w would theoretically run for 4 hours. It’s smart to subtract about 25 percent to account for the occasional wrong turn.

Customization: The stock Kenda Nevegal tires work well on a wide range of trails. When they wear out that’s a great opportunity to tweak this bike for your riding style. We ride a lot of epic, rocky trails here in ColoRADo, so we’d opt for a 29 x 2.5” Maxxis Assegai upfront and a 27.5 x 2.5” Maxxis Minion DHR on the back. However, tires are a personal thing (kinda like shoes), so we suggest trying a few different setups to see what you like best. If you love this bike and start riding it hard and fast — which you will — you might consider upgrading the fork.
