HARO Shift Plus I/O 7 Mountain eBike

If you’re looking for a killer mountain bike at a killer price, you just found it. Haro has deep roots in the BMX scene, and they bring that fun, adventurous (and affordable) spirit to their mountain bikes.

160mm of RockShox suspension smoothes out the bumps, while the “mullet” setup — a bigger front wheel than rear wheel — gives you a nice combination of easy rolling and nimble (dare we say BMX-ish?) handling. And plus: The smaller rear wheel leaves more room for your butt on steep descents. No more skid marks (at least not on your shorts).

The integrated Shimano motor and drivetrain give you complete, easy control of the amount of juice the bike adds to your leg power. Fly up the steepest hills during your lunch break or ride for miles on your Saturday group ride.

This electric bike is ideal for blue mountain bike trails: Blue mountain bike trails are moderately bumpy, have some steep grades and tend to be twisty. As you start getting the hang of mountain biking, this is where most of your fun happens. On this beast, green trails will feel easier than normal. If you have enough skill, you can shred the blacks.

Class 1 ebike: This electric bike only delivers motor power while you’re pedaling. When you reach a speed of 20 miles per hour, the motor turns off. You can keep pedaling, but it’s a lot more work. Class 1 is the most commonly allowed type of ebike; you can ride on almost any road or bike path, and on many mountain bike trails. Be sure to check your local rules.

Shimano EP-8 motor: 250 watts continuous power, 500 watts peak, with 85Nm of torque. Shimano’s newest motor is more powerful and smoother than its E8000 predecessor, and it provides more torque when you’re not pedaling fast (super useful on steep climbs). It’s currently one of the best motors out there.

630 watt-hour battery: This is the “sweet spot” for battery capacity. You get enough range for big adventures, yet the weight is quite reasonable. To estimate how long you can ride this bike, divide the battery capacity by the amount of motor power you’re using. For example, a 630wh battery with the motor running at 250w would theoretically run for 2.5 hours. The same battery at 125w would theoretically run for 5 hours. It’s smart to subtract about 25 percent to account for the occasional wrong turn.

Customization: The stock Kenda Nevegal tires work well on a wide range of trails. When they wear out that’s a great opportunity to tweak this bike for your riding style. We ride a lot of epic, rocky trails here in ColoRADo, so we’d opt for a 29 x 2.5” Maxxis Assegai up front and a 27.5 x 2.5” Maxxis Minion DHR in back. However, tires are a personal thing (kinda like shoes), so we suggest trying a few different setups to see what you like best. If you love this bike and start riding it hard and fast — which you will — you might consider upgrading the fork.
